Fort George was a military fortification located on the northern tip of Manhattan island in New York City. It was built by the British during the American Revolution in order to defend the strategic waterway of the Hudson River. Construction on the fort began in 1776, and it was completed in 1780.
The fort was named after King George III of England and was intended to be a key component of the British defense of New York City. It was composed of earthworks and palisades designed to withstand attack by American forces.
The fort was taken by the Americans in 1783, and it was partially dismantled after the war ended. Today, few traces of the original fort remain, but some of the earthworks can still be seen in the area. The site is now home to a park and a lighthouse, and it is a popular destination for tourists and history buffs.
